North Korean Refugee Entrepreneurs in South Korea:
Unveiling Korea’s Hidden Potential
December 2020
In 2018, Woorion provided assistance with surveys and interviews to support the Asia Foundation’s
report on the situation of North Korean refugee entrepreneurs in South Korea.
This research was conducted in order to gain an understanding into the situations in which North Korean entrepreneurs in South Korea find themselves, along with the obstacles and challenges they face. Despite a high percentage of North Korean Refugees having aspirations of becoming entrepreneurs, only a small percentage of the community are self-employed or run their own business. Therefore, it is hoped that this study and report will offer key insights into the difficulties faced by North Korean entrepreneurs and assist in the development of the necessary services and support to overcome these challenges.
For this research, Woorion recruited 131 refugee entrepreneurs meeting the research criteria from our community to participate in surveys and interviews conducted between March and August 2018. All 131 participants completed an online survey consisting of 84 questions, while 10 individuals participated in additional one-on-one interviews to supplement the survey data with deeper insights.
