A Study of North Koreans Legal Awareness:
Interviews with North Korean Defectors
October 2019
In 2019, we supported Seoul National University researcher Gu-jin Chung Ph.D. in researching the extent of North Koreans’ legal awareness
through a series of focused interviews with North Korean refugees.
This research project aimed to explore the extent to which communist socialization influences the political beliefs of North Koreans post defection to South Korea. The findings were to some extent consistent with early socialization models, however, also found that North Korean defectors may develop new political values while living in South Korea. Their findings suggest that a generational change may be required, in order for North Korean society to fully adopt and develop a democratic political culture.
Through our network of defectors, we constructed a survey panel of 305 respondents for this research. We provided logistical and operational support for survey design, panel recruitment, and implementation.
