The Asan Nanum Foundation
North Korean Refugee Youth Entrepreneurs: A Survey Report
2019
In 2019 we conducted a series of surveys among North Korean defectors to support the Asan Nanum Foundation’s
research into entrepreneurship among the North Korean defector community.
This study investigated the entrepreneurial knowledge and awareness, entrepreneurial intentions, and the knowledge and demand for entrepreneurial support amongst North Korean defectors. A large proportion of respondents reported an interest in entrepreneurial activities, with entrepreneurship being widely regarded as a source of stable future income. As 78.4% of respondents were female, the gender breakdown of this study strongly resembles the gender breakdown of the North Korean defector population in South Korea (as of March 2019, 72% of all North Korean defectors residing in South Korea were female, according to the Ministry of Unification Homepage). Therefore, it is hoped that this study provides a representative sample of the wider North Korean defector community as a whole, and thus will help to provide insight into the ambitions of and challenges faced by, North Korean defector entrepreneurs residing in South Korea.
For the purpose of this study, Woorion recruited a total of 130 North Korean defectors, aged between 20 and 49 years old, with whom we conducted an online survey to assess their entrepreneurial interest, knowledge, and experience.
