A Study on the Motivation of English Learning and College English Class Satisfaction of North Korean Refugee Students

Mi-Jin Shin (Yonsei University, Graduate School of Education)

A Study on the Motivation of English Learning and College English Class Satisfaction of North Korean Refugee Students

August 2019

We supported the 2019 study of Yonsei University Graduate School of Education researcher Mi-Jin Shin

on the motivations for learning English and satisfaction level with English classes of North Korean refugee students.

Research Goals

This research was conducted based on an awareness of the difficulties North Korean refugee students face in learning English, and the obstacles this causes in adapting to college life in South Korea. These issues can also be considered a contributing factor to comparatively higher college dropout rates among the North Korean defector community. To address these issues, this study aimed to investigate the motivations for learning English among North Korean defector students, their satisfaction with English classes, and the relationship between these two things in order to suggest meaningful changes that can improve the learning experience for North Korean defector students.

Our Role

To facilitate this research study, Woorion recruited 112 individuals meeting the research criteria to complete a questionnaire survey. Of these 112 individual responses, 81 cases formed the final data set for this study. All respondents were enrolled in university and had completed between 2 to 5 semesters of study as of fall 2018. Additionally, they were all either currently enrolled in or had previously taken a general English class at university. Through the survey, the researchers were able to assess the respondents’ difficulties with and desires for English classes.
