A Study on the Establishment of Institutional Infrastructure for a Normal Market Economy
in North Korea

From 2019 to 2020, we assisted Soongsil Institute for Peace and Unification with the recruitment and facilitation of surveys
for their research into the institutional infrastructure required for the transition to a normal market economy in North Korea.
This project was conducted by Soongsil Institute for Peace and Unification and supported by the UniKorea Foundation.
This research forms the first part of an extended project by Soongsil Institute for Peace and Unification called “Normal Marketization in North Korea”. It seeks to form an understanding of North Korean markets, and use that base of knowledge to determine the institutional frameworks required to facilitate the transition to a normal market economy in North Korea.
For this project, we recruited a total of 300 North Korean defectors to participate in surveys between January and February 2020. Of these 300 individuals, 20 also participated in additional in-person interviews between December 2019 and January 2020. Interview and survey participants were chosen from those originating from various regions of North Korea. This helped to ensure that findings were able to provide a balanced understanding of the situation throughout North Korea as a whole.
