The Effects of Confucian Communist Socialization in North Korea:
A Study of North Korean Defectors
December 2019
In 2018, Woorion supported the research of Korea University professor Hyunjin Oh and Chong-min Park into the effects of early-life communist socialization in shaping North Korean defectors' political beliefs following their defection to South Korea.
This research project aimed to explore the extent to which communist socialization influences the political beliefs of North Koreans post defection to South Korea. The findings were to some extent consistent with early socialization models, however, also found that North Korean defectors may develop new political values while living in South Korea. Their findings suggest that a generational change may be required, in order for North Korean society to fully adopt and develop a democratic political culture.
Through our network of defectors, we constructed a survey panel of 305 respondents for this research. We provided logistical and operational support for survey design, panel recruitment, and implementation.
